Hearing Implants
What Are Hearing Implants?
A hearing implant is an electronic device that provides sound to the deaf or profoundly hard of hearing. Where typical hearing aids simply amplify sounds, an implant transforms sounds into electrical signals and sends them directly to the auditory nerve. They use a combination of external and implanted parts.
Composition of Hearing Implants
The external components consist of a speech processor with attached microphone to pick up sounds and digitize them, which are then sent to the connected transmitter.
The internal components consist of an implanted receiver that is connected to an electrode array that sits within the cochlea. The external transmitter typically sits on top of the receiver with a magnet. External components can be removed for showers and for sleep.
